Edmonton Oilers - Season Preview

While the Oilers were shocked, having been swept in the first round of the 2021 playoffs by the Winnipeg Jets, there are plenty of positives to focus on. The team is still relatively young, they still have the best player in the league in Connor McDavid, and they should be hungry for more this year. Given last year was an anomaly with Covid restrictions, schedule changes and constant issues plaguing the NHL season – Oilers nation has a lot to look forward to this season.

Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen have to stay healthy and play consistently in net, while forwards Zach Hyman, Warren Foegele, and Derek Ryan hope to take some much needed pressure off of Connor McDavid. Duncan Keith also adds a different look to the Oilers defense having been acquired in a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks this past summer.

Edmonton Oilers Team History

In 1971, the Oilers were officially founded by W. D. ‘Wild Bill’ Hunter and Dr. Chuck Allard. The Oilers played their first season in 1972, and were one of 12 founding franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association (WHA).

Originally, the Oilers were intended to be one of two Alberta teams of the WHA, together with the Calgary Broncos. But, after Calgary relocated to become the Cleveland Crusaders prior to the beginning of the WHA’s first season, the team was renamed the Alberta Oilers.

They ended up going back to their current team name the following season, and then joined the National Hockey League in 1979 as one of four organizations absorbed through the NHL and WHA merger. The Edmonton Oilers home games are now played at Rogers Place. The 18,500 seat capacity multi-use indoor arena opened in 2016.

Edmonton Oilers Playoff History

The Edmonton Oilers made the playoffs their first 13 years in the National Hockey League. They won a playoff series only once in their first three seasons in the NHL, however managed to upset the Habs in 1980-81.

After the Oilers joined the NHL, Edmonton went on to win Lord Stanley five times: 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, 1987-88, and 1989-90. The Edmonton Oilers and the Pittsburgh Penguins are tied for the most Stanley Cups won by a team since the merger. It’s also the most won by a franchise that joined the NHL in or later than 1967.

Of all the teams in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens are the only one that has won the Stanley Cup more times since the expansion in 1967. Because of their great success throughout the 1980s, this era’s Oilers have been honoured with dynasty status by the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Oilers playoff struggles began after they came up short in their last trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006. Since then, they missed the playoffs for the following 10 seasons, while most recently competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2016-17, 2019-20, and 2020-21.

NHL North Division

The Edmonton Oilers participated in the realigned North Division last year with six other NHL teams – the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and the Montreal Canadiens.
