Toronto Maple Leafs - Season Preview

Last season came to a crashing end – in a Game 7 loss to their Canadian rival, and huge underdog – the Montreal Canadiens. Having not met in the playoffs in 43 years, the Covid-19 NHL division alignment changes had put them on a crash course to meet.

After storming out to three straight wins and going up 3-0 in the series, what will be remembered is a breakdown in scoring, disappearances of key players off the score sheet, and four straight losses to hand the series over to Carey Price and the Habs.

The Leafs have some of the youngest talent in the National Hockey League, but Auston Matthews and company will have to keep chasing that elusive Stanley which hasn’t been hoisted since 1967. The bright side being, all things point toward another potential run in 2021-22.

Toronto Maple Leafs Team History

The hockey club, along with other professional sports teams in Toronto, is owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. During their first 14 seasons, Toronto played their home games at the Mutual Street Arena, before they moved to Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931. The Leafs then moved again to their current home, Scotiabank Arena (originally known as the Air Canada Centre), in February of 1999.

The Toronto Arenas were founded in 1917. With new ownership, the organization was renamed the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919. The club was purchased by Conn Smythe in 1927 and was renamed the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The “Original Six” club has won 13 Stanley Cup trophies, second best to the 24 titles of the Montreal Canadiens. The Leafs had two historic dynasties. The first was from 1947 to 1951. The second was between 1962 and 1967, which just so happens to be the last time they won a championship. The 52-season long drought in between championships is currently the longest in the National Hockey League.

The Toronto Maple Leafs rivals include the Boston Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Ottawa Senators.

Toronto Maple Leafs Playoff History

The Leafs made their first Stanley Cup playoff appearance in 1933 against the Boston Bruins, and went on to win the series 3-2. From 1933 to 2019, these two teams played each other in the postseason 16 times, including one Stanley Cup Finals.

The Maple Leafs met the Detroit Red Wings in seven Stanley Cup Finals. In fact, they played each other for a combined 23 times in the playoffs. The Wings and Leafs have played against each other in more playoff series than any other two hockey teams in NHL history aside from Boston and Montreal.

In their 103 seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made the playoffs 69 times. The last time the Leafs actually won a playoff series was back in 2004 after they eliminated the Ottawa Senators in the First Round of the playoffs.

NHL North Division

Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs competed in the realigned North Division with six other NHL teams – the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and the Montreal Canadiens.
