Toronto Raptors - Season Preview

The Toronto Raptors are finally back on Canadian soil after Covid-19 forced the team to play their “home games” from Tampa Bay during the tumultuous 2020-2021 season. And while the Raps were officially welcomed back to T.O. and the Scotiabank Arena with Media Day photo shoots and a press conference, they’ll be without their greatest Raptor of all time, as Kyle Lowry was dealt to the Miami Heat during the off-season in a sign-and-trade for Precious Achiuwa and Goran Dragic.

In addition to the GROAT being gone, the re-build (or re-tool if you prefer) was evident when Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster selected Scottie Barnes 4th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. The bold selection left many fans, and basketball pundits in general, rather perplexed as Jalen Suggs was expected to be a lock within the top-four.

Now, with perhaps a clearer vision that’s built on length, athleticism and versatility (don’t forget about Chris Boucher), the pick doesn’t feel as much of a reach as it initially did on draft night. And although Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, and OG Anunoby are leading the way, it remains to be seen as to whether Toronto can bounce back and compete for a playoff spot (or at least exceed last season’s win total).

Toronto Raptors Team History

The Toronto Raptors were founded in 1995, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, as part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada. The Raptors, whose team name was influenced by the popular 1993 Jurassic Park film, have been the only Canadian-based franchise in the Association since 2001-02, after the Grizzlies were relocated to Memphis, Tennessee.

Toronto Raptors Playoff History

Toronto struggled early on, until they acquired Vince Carter from the Golden State Warriors in a draft-day trade for Antawn Jamison in 1998. “Air Canada” and the Raptors set NBA-attendance records, and Vinsanity helped the Raps make the NBA playoffs in 2000, 2001, and 2002. Carter led Toronto to their first playoff series win in 2001, advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals, only to be eliminated by a single point in Game 7 to Allen Iverson’s Philadelphia 76ers.

The “Carter” Effect

After VC essentially quit on the team in what was an ugly break-up to say the least, Chris Bosh was next in line as the Raptors team leader. In addition to CB4, 2006 first overall draft pick Andrea Bargnani (along with a revamped roster assembled by general manager Bryan Colangelo) helped the Raptors qualify for their first playoff appearance in five years, capturing the Atlantic Division title.

The Raptors also advanced to the postseason in 2007-08, but failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the next five NBA seasons. However, Toronto reached the playoffs in 2014 under a new era led by Masai Ujiri, Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, and became a consistent playoff team in every season of Ujiri’s tenure (aside from 2020-21). Under Ujiri’s leadership, the Raps won five Division titles and saw their most successful regular season in 2018.

North Over Everything

Despite the team’s regular-season success, their failure to reach the NBA Finals led to the firing of head coach (and COY) Dwane Casey following the 2018 playoffs. Nick Nurse was hired as head coach. DeRozan was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. The Raps then traded Jonas Valanciunas to the Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol at the NBA trade deadline.

You may recall during the 2019 playoffs the infamous Game 7, series-clinching buzzer-beater from Kawhi Leonard over Joel Embiid’s sobbing Sixers. After “The Klaw” hit “The Shot”, the Raptors bounced the Greek Freak and his Milwaukee Bucks in the next round, winning their first Eastern Conference title. Toronto advanced to their first NBA Finals, and won their first NBA championship against an injury-riddled Golden State Warriors team, who were without Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson for most of the series.

Eastern Conference: Atlantic Division

The Toronto Raptors play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with four other NBA teams – the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Boston Celtics.
