Ottawa Senators - Season Preview

The Ottawa Senators wrapped up another rough season in 2020-21. With 23 wins and 28 losses, the Sens barely squeaked by the Vancouver Canucks for the 2nd worst record in the Scotia North division. With 51 points last season, the Sens couldn’t even crack a top-20 finish in the overall NHL standings. In fact, since 2016-17, Ottawa has gotten progressively worse each and every year when it comes to the win column.

This year, expectations in the Nation’s capital aren’t overly high besides what hopes to be a bright future for Brady Tkachuk. A healthy Matt Murray has to be better between the pipes and the continued development of Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle, Thomas Chabot, and Erik Brannstrom will be critical for the Sens’ organizational success.

Canadian sportsbooks which include Sports Interaction, Betway and Intertops, can delay releasing NHL odds based on star players considered to be questionable or depending on whether a starting goalie such as Matt Murray is listed as a game-time-decision caused by a concussion.

Many top Canadian betting sites online, Spin Sports, PowerPlay, and Bet365 for example, occasionally offer betting odds sooner. But, most online sportsbooks in Canada generally release odds at nearly the same time.

Ottawa Senators Team History

Founded in 1883, the original Ottawa Senators played in the NHL from 1917 to 1934. In 1990, the NHL awarded Ottawa a new franchise, which started playing in 1992–93. The Ottawa Senators have made the playoffs 16 times, won four division titles, and won the Presidents’ Trophy once in 2003. The Sens made their only Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2007.

Ottawa Senators Playoff History

The Sens qualified for the playoffs in 1996-97 but were knocked out by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round. In 1997-98, the Sens upset the heavily favoured New Jersey Devils to win their first ever playoff series. In 1998-99, they were swept by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round. The 1999-2000 season saw the Sens lose to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the “Battle of Ontario”.

A poor playoff performance in 2000-01 meant another first round exit for the Sens. However, in 2001-02, Ottawa upset the Philadelphia Flyers for the club’s second playoff series victory. They lost in Game 7 to the Leafs in the second round of the playoffs. The Ottawa Senators placed first overall in the NHL to win the Presidents’ Trophy in 2002-03. They were within one game of advancing to the finals, but lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils.

The Senators followed up that successful season with another first round playoff loss to the Maple Leafs in 2003-04. In 2005-06, the Buffalo Sabres got the best of the Sens again – this time in the second round. But in 2006-07, the Ottawa Senators had finally reached the Stanley Cup Finals since the original Ottawa team in 1927. Unfortunately for Sens fans, they lost in five games to the Anaheim Ducks. In 2007-08, the Ottawa Senators were swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the playoffs.

Ottawa missed the playoffs in 2008-09, and then lost to the Pens again in the first round in 2009-10. In 2011-12, the Senators lost in the first-round to the Conference champion New York Rangers in seven games. The Sens beat the second-seeded Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the 2012-13 playoffs in five games. However, Ottawa lost to the top-seeded Penguins in the second round in five games. Two years later, Ottawa lost to the Habs in the first round in six games of the 2014-15 playoffs.

The 2016-17 season was the last time the Sens qualified for the playoffs. They beat the Boston Bruins in six games in the first round, and defeated the New York Rangers in six games in the second round, but lost to Pittsburgh in seven games in the Conference Finals.

NHL North Division

The Ottawa Senators played in the NHL’s realigned Scotia North Division last year with six other NHL teams – the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and the Montreal Canadiens.
